Help me choose a synthetic oil
I am due for my next oil change with my '98 Neon 2.0L DOHC, MTX. I think I'm going to start running synthetic oil, but I know very little about it. What brand name & weight should I use? I have 51,000 miles.
I too use Mobil 1 synthetic with of course a Mobil 1 oil filter. I use 5W-30 though, since that is actually recommended in the owners manual for my car. I change my oil myself and between the oil and the filter it probably costs me 28-30 bucks, which is only a few dollars more than I was getting charged by the dealer and they were not using synthetic oil.
I use Penzoil or Castrol GTX. I've used Mobil 1 and didn't like the results.
I'll soon be swapping over to Amsoil for all of my coolant, lubrication and air filter needs. I've spent enough money on this turbo that I want it to last a long *** time so I'm going with the best. Amsoil. Been around since the 1930's and has been proven over and over again. Of course, I'll be paying $200+ for just the oil and filtration system but what's an extra $200 when I've already spent $4K on a turbo?

Al Amatuzio formulated the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet API service requirements for automobile engines. His Amsoil 10W-40 first appeared in 1972, although the Germans in WW II used synthetic oil, very similar to STP when their oil reserves ran short...
I'm thinking of changing over to Castrol GTX Start Up, that's when most engine wear occurs. Anyone with input on how effective it is????????

I have no idea what I was thinking about when I said 1930's I was probably thinking the Germans...eh..who knows. Thanks for correct that.
The sad thing is I've got Amsoil's book right in front of me and I couldn't take 30 seconds to pick it up.
Didn't know he was a jet pilot. And Amsoil ahs been around for a long time their synthetic came out in 1972. But they've been around since about 1960 or possibly earlier.
At any rate, I plan on using Amsoil for the turbo. My friend Mike has been using Amsoil since 1983 and swears by it. He currently runs it on his Ram Turbo Diesel and has changed his oil twice in the past 2 years.
