New diesel fuel, old cummins.
So I have a '99 Cummins.
I know that last October they came out with the new diesel around where I live. As far as I understand, it's low sulfer which is what lubricates the engine. I heard that you're supposed to buy some kind of fuel additive to make it easier on your engine with the new diesel. What kind am I supposed to get, and what happens if I run it a lot without the additive? I've only put a few tanks in it since then. I don't drive too much since I'm at college and everyone else drives. ha.
Thanks.

Most of us use 12-16 oz of Power Service along with 8-16 oz of 2 cylcle oil to help lube the fuel system. I know there are other kinds of additives and someone will come along post what they like to use.
Sulfer doesn't really do anything for your engine. The process of removing the sulfer results in lower lubricity, however the fuel manufacturers have specs to meet so they add lubricating additives back in. I do on occasion use some Lucas fuel additive, but not on a regular basis. I don't beleive it is needed.
A very common additive package is 16 OZ of Power Service Diesel additive, (White Bottle in Winter, Grey Bottle the rest of the year) and 8 OZ of Marvel Mystery Oil per Tank of 20-30 Gallons of Diesel. Some people also use a Lucas additive. There seems to be a slight milage increase that probably offsets the cost of the PSD and MMO.

I looked on PS's site and saw a whole bunch of stuff but didn't see anything that applied to my issue of the new fuel. Is this additive above supposed to be put into every tank? And do you put it in before or after you fuel. Vehicles aren't my forte, if you can't tell, ha. Thanks.

What is the difference between the whit and gray bottle again?
I remember that the white bottle is supposed to help keep your fuel from gelling, but what's in the gray bottle that makes you want to shift over to using it in warmer temps? Why is it better than the white bottle in the summer? What is you just keep using the white bottle year round?

IIRC The gray bottle gives you a higher Centane boost (3 to 6 numbers) to your diesel but no anti gel. The white has less Centane boost (2 to 4 numbers) has anti gel in it and will also disburse water. Some people do use the white bottle year round and some use both in the wintertime, i.e. 8oz white and 8 oz gray.
