What happened to the DIY Oil-Change thread???? Gonna change the oil today and just wanted to review that thread again.

Cant remember if the engine should be warm or not before changing. Right now it has been sitting all night

Get a bucket or container big enough to hold all the oil. Drain oil,replace plug, fill up new filter with new oil, screw it back on hand tight good, fill engine, start and check for leaks, top of if necessary. You may want to consider getting a fumoto drain valve from geno's, makes draining easier.

any way from keeping the oil in the filter from spewing out?

 

the best way I have found to keep the filter from becoming a huge mess is to park the truck on level ground. . .then wait about 2-3hrs. when you pull the filter off you will notice it will be a bit more than 1/2inch below the threads.

I always run my engine up to operating temp and get the oil nice and hot before I change it. It drains more thoroughly and faster when it's hot. Just be careful when removing the plug and filter. I just did the first oil change on mine a week ago and was surprsied that taking the filter off created virtually no mess at all compared to other vehicles I've had. Just a little wiping with a rag here and there and what little oil did get on stuff was gone.

 

Here's how I do it and it works perfectly every time.

I get myself one of those full sized kitchen trash bags. I take the bag and I wrap it around the filter, but I open the bag up so thatI can still get my wrench and hands around the filter. I crack the filter with the wrench, and unscrew the filter the rest of the way by hand. I unscrew the filter and drop it right into the bag below / around it. If anything spills out, it spills right into the bag. No muss .... no fuss. WhenI pull the bag out, the filter and spilled oil is all inside. Works like a charm every time.

BTW: I change my oil filter from above, not under the truck. Before doing anything I first remove the air filter ( K&N ) to make accessing the oil filter a cinch. Since I alreay have the air filter out, I clean and re-oil that as well. I do both every 5000 miles.
