Default Turbo cool down......

Can anyone give an opinion as to whether they allow their turbo a cool down period after normal or even heavy towing sessions on the road. It was advised to me to just sit at an idle for a period of 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on the degree of strain put upon the engine or turbo. This is said to prevent what was referred as "coking" the interior of the turbo. Sort of like baking the surface of oil and a build up occuring over time.
So...,. what's the scoop?

I hav my turbo timer set for 1 minute after I turn the truck off under normal drivng conditions. This EASILY gets my EGT's below 300*, usually down to around 270*.

If I was pushing it or came straight off the highway from a long run, I'll bump that up to 2 minutes.

If I have the big trailer behind it and was on the highway, I bump it to 5 minutes.

I can also set it to go of the actual EGT's, but my pyrometer is before the turbo, so all it is seeing is the actual exhaust temp, not the heat soak temp that the turbo is feeling. If you wanna go off of EGT, then you want your pyro probe to be mounted after the turbo.

There is a guide in the owners manual for type of driving vs cool down time. I ususally give it a min or two after getting off the highway. If pulling I give it about 5 minutes or so. Oneof these days I'm gonna get some guages so I don't have to guess.

I turn mine off at 400 or below. If you tow heavy, with an automatic tranny, I would give it up to 5 minutes. I would also leave the tranny in neutral to circulate fluid. Factory tranny do not circulate in PARK.

Winter time is not as critical. You can get away with the 30 seconds-1 minute.

Good luck with your ride.

Whenever I show off to my friends, I'm finding I do that alot... I always let the truck sit for a minute, so not only the turbo can cool down, but whatever else needs to cool down.

I use the TST timer after all driving... hit the switch and it'll kill the motor after 300* is reached or 4 minutes. Usually takes less than a minute to get to 300.

Thanks for the information guys. I'm the one at fault for not reading my manual in depth. Can anyone recommend one of these timers and just how do they work?
