I thinkn I'm losing an injector

RE: I thinkn I'm losing an injector
On this vintage of engine they should be able to do a cylinder cut out electronically and diagnose which injector has intermittant behavior. (if the condition is severe enough to detect) It sounds like you may have some contaimination in an injector that is intermittantly causing the needle to stick. Due to the intermittant nature of this type of failure it is very difficult to troubleshoot. By the way, when you say cold start, how cold was it? A injector needle sticking can cause overfueling and a change in injection timing. Both of these can cause the white smoke and the black smoke. Make sure you are using reputable fuel filters...

RE: I thinkn I'm losing an injector
I was a step ahead of you guys, I put in a fresh tank of fuel, and some Cummins injector cleaner, and we went camping this weekend. I rode it hard to the lake Friday, and coming home today I ran it through the gears to red line in every gear except 6th up a long grade. Then ran 75 MPH the rest of the way home (20+ miles). It seems like the power is bettter, but when I got home it still will give a little puff of balck smoke if I rev it from idle. The good thing is it wasn't laying a cloud when I was on it coming home. Next week some time I'm gonna go get serviced I'm gonna have them hook me up and do and contribution test at least.

I have been having a tick on cold starts, then a couple weeks ago I had a miss for about 30 seconds. Yesterday I started her up in the morning, and before I cranked I turned the mirror down so I could see the exhaust. It didn't catch the first key hit so I hit it a second time and she fired up and a puff of white smoke comes out, then none then another puff. I let it idle for a minute and rev the engine a little and it gives a little black smoke puff, I repeated it several times same result. Today I fired her up in the morning and same thing only it fired on the first try today, but still a little puff of white smoke, then a little black smoke when I revved it. After a 35 mile trip on the interstate I got to my customer and parked, when I revved it I still get a little puff of balck smoke. I'm not revving it alot just a little bump of the pedal. My oil is not over full, but it is to the full line. My air filter was replaced last Firday and the minder is not pulled down yet so I am OK with air supply. The only other thing is my mileage is off ever so slightly and power for hard acceleration seems off too. Thoughts???
Sorry about the long post.

Swiched from ULSD to LSD red problem went away went back to USLD and the problem came back towards the end of the first tank went back to the LSD red poblem went away again.
Going to the stealership next week and will see if they will do anything about it.
Evidently the common rail injectors don't like the ULSD.

RE: I thinkn I'm losing an injector
I have noticed a good bit loader motor on the ulsd myself. Also When I shut down I get a knock sound from the front of the engine. I know there is a tsb on the alt pulley but this is not the case. I first noticed a fairly noticeable tick when I decel mostly in tow hual as the motor spools down instead of downshifting. even louder when pulling a load.It makes no differance if my edge is on 3 or 1 or stock. Now I can hear what sounds like a rod knock or really noisy injector at idle. I there any way this could be the CP3?? I am not familiar with the inner workings of this pump, but to be noisy at idle, shutdown, and tick under a load (maybe backpressure).
I amtaking the horses up to Land Between Lakes in Kentucky thursday. I am going to pull that horse trailer like I stole it. If no help, as bad as I hate to, I am going to break down and take the edge off and test the skillsof themechanic at the local dealer. Any thoughts or sugestions??

Like I said before, it is better but still not right. The diesel tech at my dealer has been covered up, so I haven't had a chance to get it in yet.
