Is a lil black smoke normal on a newer CTD?
I just bought this used 2005 dodge 2500 CTD 4X4. It runs excellent and has great fuel mileage. I havent owned a diesel before and was wondering how much BLACK smoke is normal. If im puttering around town I cant see any coming out. but if i lay into pedal about 1/4 way from a dead stop or when cruising at say 40km/h) I can see black smoke coming out of exhaust a little. When turbo starts to spool it clears up. Is this normal or did the past owner chip it up or something? how can I tell? Its the 325Hp model 5.9 CTD also with automatic tranny.
PS...I tried to do a break torque and it doesnt do anything but accelerate like a bat out of hell. My buddies 2007 ford f350 6.0PSD lays black marks in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. Whats up with that?

A little smoke is normal, expecially before the turbo spools up. As for power braking, I believe the cummins put's out so much torque the front brakes can't hold it back (at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it

If it's a programmer, there's no way of knowing unless you have the dealer scan the ecm. If it's a box, it should be hooked up to the map sensor and the engine data link on the drivers side of the engine. They usually like to mount the box somewhere on the drivers fender.
do u have a pic of this box. looking under my hood i see a couple of relays tie wrapped to frame that dont look factory.i have a pic here. the little black wire leaves the battery and goes to this relay. other wire goes to DS of engine somewhere. This is the relay here in pic tie wrapped to DS of engine compartment.
