Default I reused diff cover gasket....is that good

Is it ok to reuse the gasket from the diff covers. I changed the rear diff today and the old gasket looked good. I just cleaned surfaces good and added a little rtv silicone to one side of gasket and voila....no leaks yet. but im wondering becuase i read of most using just the silicone.(no gasket)

In my opinion it is NEVER ok to reuse a gasket unless its an emergency and you plan on replacing it or it doesnt matter if that particular part leaks.

Never reuse gaskets, Its like reusing a rubber. Might work for awhile, but could fail later

Don't sweat it, you're good. The gasket on the AAM axles is designed to be reused. It's not a disposable type like the ones of old.

And, you're not suppossed to use RTV with it.

Just clean the surfaces and re-install.

Here, read this.....

the local dodge stealer here uses a silicone based gasket crap when they do your dif's. no rubber, cork, or an other form of prefab gaskets are used. hell i even got a free tube from then too!!!

On the trucks with D60 axles, then yes, you need the RTV as they don't have reusable gaskets.

The AAM axles have a reuseable one.

the difference between the rears with and without a gasket, 8-1/4 and 9-1/4 use sealer 10.5 and 11.5 use a gasket. and as per the dodge service manual the gasket is ment to be used 3 to 4 times. if its over tightened it will need replaced otherwise use it again.
