I've got an 02 with the six speed and I am having problems with 5th gear. I bought the truck used and every once in a while it would scratch going into 5th. I didn't think anything of it, but then 3 days ago it started scratching a little just about every time I went to 5th. I'm not talking grinding or anything serious at this point just a small noise. Well then the next day I started it and first time I go for 5th it is like I tried to hit reverse, so I felt the pattern and went for 5th again thinking maybe I was tired and actually had tried reverse, nope. So now I figure my 5th gear syncho is shot. I thought that was kinda wierd since I always match RPM and my shifts are always smooth, figured it would be 2nd or 3rd that would go out first. I was in the process of moving from CO to MN so I just started double clutching 5th and that has worked fine. (my grandpa's and dad all used to be truckers so I've driven old trucks where that was necessary) I haven't played around with transmissions much yet, is there anything besides a bad synchro that would cause just 5th to feel that way? Also how hard would it be for me to drop the transmission and replace it myself. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

 

the NV5600 is a monster. . .you need a massive transmission jack just to get it down since the thing tips the scale around 400+ pounds.

anyway, once you get it out good luck in finding a rebuild kit that's not priced where you have to give a kidney for. since New Venture went out of buisness parts have become scarce for our trannies. some are attempting to build replacement parts, however New Process who bought New Venture now holds the patents on these parts.

once you have the tranny out, removal of the core is actualy pretty simple, you just need a cherry picker to pull them out since once again weight is an issue.

 

Yea, I called the dealership to see what they said the price would be..800 bucks for what they wanted to sell me. I found the synchro from a company called allstate gear for 32 dollars... just a slight difference in price huh? The syncrho should be all I need correct?

 

maybe. . .maybe not. . .the only way would be to pull it apart and see. however if you want you can get a master rebuild kit for the NV5600 for a bit over 800.

Ok, well I tore into the project and so far I've gotten the transmission out and apart, no small feat when you're just kinda learning as you go. My uncle said he would help me if I got myself into trouble and he was a diesel mechanic for years so I figured why not. I got it all apart and found the problem without him, though. The 5th gear synchro was bad, but I got lucky that it went bad. The real cause of the problem was a bearing that went out. As bad as the bearing looks I would have thought the transmission would have been real noisy, but it wasn't, sounded and felt normal. So yea, I barely dodged a bullet here. If I had run that transmission too much longer I probably would have been looking at a whole new unit. Just so I don't get Mayfair on here complaining about this thread being worthless here are some pics.

You've got moer cajones than I do. I would never attempt a tranny rebuild by myself. Well done brotha !!

 

I have no idea what I was just looking at. But good work on doing it yourself. Thats always a great feeling when you don't really know what your doing, but you find the cause and can fix it on your own.

 

yea. . .that syncro is shot. . .and it has me wondering if the reason the syncro is shot was due to the bearing failing.

 

Yea, I figure the bearing is what ruined the syncro
