As some of you may know I recently got my Cummins that I have dreamt about for quite some time. The stealership was running a sale I just could not say no to. Many mods are planned but after some time to let the wife deal with the sticker shock. I can't very well buy a $40k truck and then drop another 10k in mods a month later. I would have had my ***** physically removed. Anyhow, back on subject. I was under the impression that even the '06 5.9's like the one in my 07 truck was a very clean motor and I would have to mod it to get any black smoke out of the tailpipe? I found this disappointing yet understandable. Just last night though, one my way home I had to get in the gas and jet around this rediculously slow old couple in front of me. Low and behold, black smoky goodness. I am not talking clouds of diesel death here ( that would've been cool too), but it was noticable. Now don't get me wrong, Happiness and giddiness ensued, I just want to make certain that there isn't anything wrong for a newer engine with less than 1000 miles to put that out already. If nothing is wrong Woo Hoo happiness. Please Diesel Gods, put my mind at ease.

RE: May sound retarded, but.....
Same thing happened to me. I bought a 07 5.9l and I picked it up at night time so I couldn't see anything then, but the day after I got it I just couldn't resist and I punched it once in 4th at about 40 mph or so and a little black smoke did puff out (I was so happy, I about wet my pants). Anyway, It now has straight exhaust no cat and no muffler and it hasn't ever puffed that much since then. It does still do it a little if I really get on it, but you can barely see it at all. I think to get the smoke we are looking for, you'll need a chip/controller. Anyway good luck with the new truck, I haven't had any second thoughts about mine at all, love everything about it!

BTW our trucks have 4" smooth bend pipe from the factory. I took mine to the local dirt cheap muffler place and they cut out the cat and muffler and welded in a straight 4" piece to replace them (with all the appropriate hangers and such, and painted the welds) for - $30 labor + $35 parts. That would be a cheap "mod" and it sounds sweet too!!

Mine has a/t and it makes a little puff, nothing spectacular, what impressed me more is through the intersection there was a little roughspot and after I hit that the rear tires spun the rest of the way through the intersection. Even Stock , these babies have some giddyup!

If you want to maximze your smoke on a stock truck, drive around real slow and easy for a while, when you punch it after doing that you will get more smoke.

If you do just put around it is good to push it hard everyonce in a while to clear out all the carbon build up.

I can smoke it up since I put my Rokk sensor in , if somebody rolls out in front of me and goes to sleep in the lane the peddle goes to the metal she kicks down and will leave a good amount gray-black smoke, in their car and for them to drive through.

It nice to adjust the mirror sometimes just to watch the smoke flow
