Default Exhaust-is it worth it?

I owe my dad a little over $2000 for my 1999 CTD I bought a few weeks ago and he said when I pay him off, I can do whatever mods I want. I've already put in a K&N and I want some sort of chip eventually, but I think the cheapest thing to do next is exhaust. Is an engineered exhaust kit, cat-back or turbo-back, worth the $500+ it costs? The exhaust system is already huge and I know cutting out the muffler would add sound and performance, but I don't want my truck to be too loud. I own a lawncare business and work in neighborhoods where people might complain if my truck is straight-piped. Would just a high-flow muffler replacement do enough since the tubing is already pretty big, or should I go all out and get a full system?

for that 99 a full 4 inch exhaust would be the cats meow. get yourself a good muffler or a donaldson 51" flow through to quiet it down and you'll realy notice the difference.

right now you have a 3.5 from the turbo to the muffler, after the muffler it goes to 4 inch.

actualy lowers EGT's due to lower restrictions. however there is a point where going too big actualy hurts you.

unless your pushing big power. . .over 550hp, then 4 inches is all you need, over that number then 5" is needed. what happens is you just dont have the exhaust flow to help pull the exhaust out it will end up just sitting in there and build up heat just as if you had a muffler.

the lower the restrictions on a diesel the better the engine will run. however just like a gasser you do have a trade off in that you will loose a bit on the bottom end.

For what its worth, i just got back from getting my truck after having the muffler cut out. It doesn't sound as good as my brother in laws ctd, but still sounds good when you get on it......The best part is it was cheaper than quoted and only cost me$25. It's nice to be loved

Thanks for all the replies. I looked at the Aero 4040 and found places I could get it for about $190. I think I would need a piece of tubing that goes from 3.5 to 4 inch to put it in and of course add a huge chrome tip. If I can find tubing pretty cheap, I may cut out all the straightest parts and make it 4" as far as I can. But that will be at least a couple months from now, maybe more like around Thanksgiving. If anybody knows of a cheap full 4" system (less than $400) or another replacement muffler that is good, let me know.
