Default exhaust question

k i dont have a diesel yet but i want one and am trying to figure out every aspect of everything so i dont do too much wrong the first time.. i was thinking instead of buying a whole exhaust system and everything, could i just buy a good name brand aftermarket muffler then run about 6" of pipe then just put a turndown tip on it? would that eliminate having power taken away from the bends in the tailpipe(s)? i mean i know there all mandrel bent pipes but just straight out makes more sense to me.. idk just something i thought up nd thought i would get some pretty good answers here.. thanks guys

just cut one hole in the bed and run a 6" stack. that will solve all your problems

anyway, there isnt that much of a restriction when you have a 4" sewer pipe for an exhaust from the factory. remove the stock muffler and put something else in and youe engine will tank you for the EGT reduction.

I did the MBRP replacement on my 05 and like it.
It has more "grunt" on the low end but is almost stock sounding when on the road.

well my question is, Do you have a cummins? Your signature states you have a 1/2 ton dodge. Unless it's custom, I can't see it having a cummins.? maybe a typo? Also, I was told if your not careful and you do have a cummins, and you run a too relaxed exhaust, you could shoot out your turbo. Not sure if it's true or not. Could be wrong. *shrugs* wouldn't be the first time. I'm just going to cut off my muffler and run a straight pipe. Maybe invest in drew's idea and run a stack pipe, might look cool since i have a flatbed. Ehhh, who knows, it'll probably end up looking all tacky with me doing it myself.

Ive never had to worry about lack of power with my CTD. I dont think a few bends in the exhaust will make a major difference with a CTD

yea i said i dont have a diesel (yet) i want one very badly so im just getting my ideas together so ill know exactly wat to do when i do get one.. wat i am saying is cutting off the whole exhaust including the muffler, then taking and aftermarket muffler and put it on there, then just running no tailpipes, so i would only have to buy a muffler instead of a whole system. after the muffler i would but a short piece of pipping then a turndown tip but not doing any over axle tailpipes with bends. also if i were to do that set up and get a muffler with dual outs would it still have the sound benefit of a whole dual system?

Not sure, I mean if you don't really want really loud you could always run a performance muffler which is fairly flow through. I know I saw one on here earlier and read up on it. But the bends in the pipe aren't going to affect it that much. Plus, you have to look at how your going to harness your pipe. If I were you I'd just clip off the catalytic converter and the muffler, replace with similar sized piping, weld it all together real good. I mean real good. Becareful not to burn through. Using a mig is good for this. Make sure you know someone who can use a mig good or if you can do it your self even better. Just straight pipe it. Looks stock but gives you more performance and lots more throatty sound even on the 03 and newers. My buddy went to banks monster exhaust, decided to straight pipe his truck. His is a 03 same as mine. I bought the pipe and got his banks muffler, so he 4 inched it then it broke on him because he didn't secure it real good. So now he's just running a straight pipe to approx where the fuel cap would be if it was on the passenger side. It's, umm.. Ear hurt loud when he gets on it. Just gotta decide what you wanna do. I want mine louder, I don't think the difference between the monster exhaust and straight pipe is enough to improve my power enough for me to even notice. Everyone has their own opinions. Oh btw. I had a boss who had a 00' cummins straight piped. Only difference between the 00 and my buddies 03 is the engine rattle, but as for exhaust sound, the 03 is just as loud if not louder.
