At least for 1995 model year Cummins Rams
the original $3700 option for the diesel + 2500 frame upgrade
is now worth more than $6000 on the used market
compared to a gasoline engine 1500

The engine alone makes resale or salvage value great for the Cummins. We had a 95 get wrecked and the insurance company was only going to give us 2k for it. Pulled the engine (which ran great and was turned up) and sold it for 4k and parted out the rest. It damn near paid for the 96 we bought to replace it. So even in pieces they're still worth something.
