I just had a day off and changed oil, fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, and changed out the rear dif and added the mag hi-tech cover. I went with the amsoil severe gear 75w90 in the rear. I will say I am glad I went ahead and changed out the oil b/c the stock gear oil looked kinda milky after only 20k miles. I think the amsoil is good oil but I agree that I dont like the way they sell it. I don't want to become some member or have to try to find some guy when I don't order enough gear oil!!! That new hi-tech cover held about 8 qts! I ordered 7 thinking 6 would do it. Anyway, had to take my greasy *** in the house and try to find a amsoil dealer close to me and luckilyhe had some 75/90 laying around. I went with the blue valvoline synthetic oil with the big "C" for cummins approved on the front that I know I can get at any Napa auto store. I think I am probably done with amsoil for a while anyway.

I just switched over and haven't really made a decision yet. I've got about 1300 miles on the oil since I changed it last week. The engine does seem to be running smoother, but as for an increase in mpg I really haven't seen anything. I've always had good luck with synthetics so that's why I went with Amsoil. I ran a 350 Chevy for 300k with the factory tranny, rear, and front end and had no motor problems at all with the stuff.

That's also one of the reasons why i don't make the switch. I like having the availability to pick up replacement oils just about anywhere. Hell, I can almost go to a local 7-11 and find Rotella T

Cummins official position on synthetic engine oil is on page 12
of this .pdf

www.everytime.cummins.com/every/pdf/MPG_Secrets_Whitepaper.pdf

the graph there seems to say that in very cold weather there is a slight MPG advantage
but at normal oil temperature (230 degrees F) there is a slight MPG loss
but the situation is complicated by two different viscosities tested
