I had looked into it when I had a '97 5.9l (gasser) 1500, and it didn't look TOO difficult, obviously there are some particulars to each situation, however the biggest issue is $ like bajafun said. Do your homework, and take trips to junkyards and such, the parts should mount up like stock setup (There was a manual diesel option in 2001 right?) if you just get the stock transmission cross member, and get a set of stock pedals. Good luck, I was 95% certain I could have done it in my old truck when I decided the money I needed to put into that thing was not worth it and just decided to get the one I got now.

Go for it, the only reason I didn't do it was because I had 150k on my old truck and it needed more then just tranny work, I also wanted engine work and such, I basically was planning on a custom rebuild with some more then excessive mods to get the towing capabilities the CTDs have...
Good luck!

Got the trans sitting on the bench in the shop. Done some research and it looks like its gonna be pretty easy. Not sure when I'll be getting to it, hopefully within the next 2 months.
