hard to find. . .these engines and that setup is one people dont like letting go of.

it would be easier to post up what you find since from 98.5-02 the resell prices for those years are actualy lower than 94-98.4 and 03 and up due to a few issues, VP44 injector pump for one, and the '53' block.

the VP44 injector pump is a weak link since if you loose fuel pressure and flow to the inlet the distributer will fry itself. and the '53' block was a brazilian casting that had a thin water jacket on the exhaust side that is prone to cracking. you can tell it is a 53 block by looking at the casting on the front bottom of the engine. however if your looking for a 99 I doubt they had them during those years, however the 6spd might be harder to come by. while it was introduced in 99, it didnt realy show up in mass untill 01.

how weak are th 53 blocks? now i am scared. is it easy to fix if it breaks? is there a way to prevent it?

there is some external girdling you can install to help with that. realy it is hit or miss. some guys have their truck crunk and no issues, where as those that are stock have problems. are you sure you have a '53' block??? if not your good, however with those blocks the water jacket is only 5.5mm thick instead of the 11mm someone misread the casting specs.

if it breaks it is rather intensive to fix it. you have to use the lock and stitch method where you drill holes at the begining and end of the crack to keep it from spreading farther and a few more holes throughout the crack, then weld the crack up.

on the top of the engine in vertical print it says 53040 and in horizontal print it says 202ad if this helps. if some one could tell me if this is one of the weaker blocks.

Yeah, no joke about that setup being hard to find Drew. I spent over a month scrouging ads and managed to find one for sell from an Estate deal up in Montana. Haven't found another one since, well with 4x4 and under 150k on mileage. Glad I got it though, first truck and fun as hell.

I need to move to North Carolina and look for trucks then cause here in Texas finding all those options in the old body style was damn near impossible.
