Default FINALLY.....i have my CTD

This is an epic tale of a man coming into ownership of his 1st Cummins turbo diesel

It all started in later July 2007 as I was filling up my 2002 dodge ram 1500; with gas prices soaring through the roof. Being a long-time fan of the diesel lifestyle; it had finally occurred to me to seek out if I could actually afford to purchase one. Being a new general contractor putting on hefty mileage; the timing seemed right. I secured a 15,000.00 bank loan (of course I could have gotten more; but I figured I better not because I knew I will spend it all). I had found a truck after a week here in Vancouver, British Columbia; a 1998 12 Valve; Laraime Quad cab with 215,000kms. I loved this truck; it seemed to be in great shape but for some reason I decline to make the purchase which had an asking price of 18,900.00 cdn. I resorted to looking at craigslist when I came across a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 24 valve SLT Quad Cab from Washington State for 15, 500.00USD. I drove down that night; took it for a test drive; and decided that this was the truck for me. I knew it would require a new power steering box for sure; among some other variables. I bought the truck the following day and moved it up to birch bay for storage; as I tried to bring it over the boarder I was informed that the certificate of title I was given was actually a copy and I would need to obtain the original; no big deal it was being mailed from the bank in California to the old owner.

Friday June 29 2007
I received a call from the husband of the wife that had sold me the truck. He had no idea that his truck had be sold out on him. Apparently they were on the splits after many years of marriage and 7 kids. I was shocked; was I just ripped off of 15 grand? I held my tongue until someone got that title because that was the only thing I needed to get my truck here into Canada. The husband said I could keep the truck as he was only looking to get a grand from the sale; but the wife would not give him any. Being a nice guy as I am; and understanding that selling a man’s truck from him is a horrid thing; I gave him 500 cash (which really brought the truck back up to asking price); and he gave me the title and signed new papers with me in person a week later. That’s the jist of the situation but it was quite dramatic and I was put in the middle of it trying to be a peace keeper. The guy didnt mind so much about the loss of truck; but it was just the princpal that it was "stolen" from him i guess? he bought a 2007 Chevy peice of **** diesel....I had to question why he did that :S ?

My truck enters Canada. Exporting the truck took no time at all; just had to file the papers 72 hours before hand (which I had done a week before – as the copy of the title was sufficient for a fax); I went in; they stamped the title and I was off to Canada. Filled out new Canadian federal papers; they took a $200 registar fee and $100 a/c fee. And I paid 6% gst tax. July 13 2007 I had the truck inspect; which is required to register an exported vehicle in Canada. It Failed; on the federal inspection it failed on not having any compliance labels as found on the door or door jamb and no day time running lights. On provincial inspections it failed on the power steer box which as leaking. Quoted repair costs of 1800$. I figured as much but I don’t like Canadian Tire’s mechanics. I don’t trust crooks. So I took it to my personal guy whose a long time friend and registered mechanic and former inspector. He originally quoted 1200-1400; 3 weeks later he had the thing fixed; they sent him the wrong power steering box twice; and he finally found the right on in Arizona which cost almost 900 dollars so much for the whole sale price he could get me. He just babied the truck though; everything under the hood looks as if it was brand new. Ended up being about 2000 dollars to get it all repaired; he went above and beyond; which is a good thing in the long run.

As for finding compliance labels; well, that was no easy task. I contacted dodge and after getting the run around for a few days I finally got a hold of someone and all they did for me was email me saying “this truck meets USA specifications.” Which really only ½ helped me as they need to copy down all the info from the label so they can make up a new cantina label that I am to affix to the truck. How did I find all that info out? That’s were Mayfair the saint comes into play; he has the same truck and he took a picture of it for me; I copied it out changed the date of manufacture (a complete guess for this truck); the vin number; and country of manufacture in this case it was mexico. I made it look like dodge had attached this info with me in the email. They bought it. Thank god; otherwise I would have been up **** creek.

It passed. I flew outta there; threw insurance on it; and now am enjoying the famed 20 miles to the gallon and all the other wonders of the Cummins turbo = ). I bought it on june 27th 2007; finally was able to drive it on august 4th 2007. Final costs estimated to be in for just under 20,000 cdn…about 19,300 USD….not bad I figured I saved about 3-6 grand from what they are going for around here…IF you can find them.

That is a hell of a story congrats. I would have not been able to wait that long. I get mad during the three to six hours of negotiation.

Get yourself a decent lift pump on that thing. I recommend FASS but there are others out there. Then gauges, exhaust and intake. After that you'll have a good starting platform to add other upgrades.

Haha; yeah i didn't really have a choice but to go through it all; it just sorta went for the worse; there really isnt that much info rediably available on exporting/importing vechicles; but now i know the major things fro bringing them into canada: get the original title; make sure it has compliance lables; a big plus if its made in the usa and not mexico; daytime running lights that come on when the key is turned on....but like i said; i bought the thing so i had to stick it out or lose my money....
