Default low pressure from lift pump

Hello:
I bought a 01 2500 24 valve with the 6 speed tranny a few months ago. After reading about the problems with the vp44 I checked my truck. I found that the injector pump has already been replaced. I don't know when. The lift pump has been converted to an in-tank type. I assume that the local dodge dealer did this conversion. I put in a low pressure warning light (comes on at 4 psi). I have notice the light flickering on hard accleration or pulling a hill with trailer. I hooked up a temporary fuel pressure gauge and found I have 7 psi at idle and as I accelerate it drops to about 5 psi unless I push it hard then to 4 psi and the light flickers. The mechanic at the dealership said the in-take is a volume pump and not a pressure pump. My internal BS (bull****) meter started to beep at this point. Physics says that if the line size is the same then to have more volume requires more pressure. Should I replace the in-tank pump with the same pump or ?????? I would like not to have to worry and not have to change this pump at a regular basis. TYIA

PS (edit) I changed the fuel filter and no change.

Get a FASS system that seems to be a general favorite around here. I'm not understanding what the mechanic meant by that. all pumps flow a certain volume of said substance at a certain pressure. I mean hell if you have a giant hose you could be getting 100 gpm and only have like 4 psi. smaller the hose is then the more pressure. but yea I don't think he knows what he's talking about. because as your pump flows more volume of fuel the pressure will go up and vise verca. from what i've come tto understand is that once your pump gets to do the PSI numbers that you're getting it's time to change before the VP44 takes a dive.

Replace the lift pump NOW, otherwise you'll also be replacing the VP again.

DO NOT continue to drive your RAM !!!!!

I'd replace your current lift pump with a FASS. In my opinion, it's the best one out there. If your truck is basicaly stock, get the 95gph FASS with the full sized ( 150 ) filters. The last thing I'd do is put another in tank pump in. As you're learning, they're JUNK !

If you need any help on the install, feel free to ask.

Here are some install links ...

I ordered mine here ...

You are getting the same numbers that I am getting on the in-tank lift pump. My PSI is 10 at idle, 6 going down the interstate and 3-4 pulling a trailer up a 3% grade. I have been doing this for 32K miles(with the in-tank pump)and am still on the original VP44 with 172k on the truck.

You have got to rememberthat the old lift pump was right up there next to the VP44 which only had about 2 feet of line between the pump and the VP44. The old pump has 10 feet of line from the tank up to the VP44 and has more volume to pressurize. The numbers you are getting are fine for the Pusher style pump.

If your in-tank pump goes out, I would suggest the FASS or Walbro setup. The next time my lift pump goes out, that is what I am going to replace it with.

Another good thing about the in-tank pump is this. When it dies, fuel stops flowing. Your engine will not continue to run like they did with the up-front out of tank pumps. I know this because I had one in-tank pump go bad. When it went bad, the whole truck STOPPED dead in its tracks. I have also blown the fuse going to the relay and the same thing, dead in its tracks. I am 100% certain that if I had the up-front out of tank pump that I would have been replacing the VP44.
