Whats a good remote starter unit?
I have a 2004 dodge ram cummins and my local dealer wants to charge me roughly $520 canadian without taxes for a POLAR 4460 remote starter unit and install. It comes with1LCD screen remote control with time, etc...It tells me when truck is running or which door is locked, unlocked etcc..(it also has a timer and i can set what time the truck can start).Am i getting hosed. I wanted a 2nd remote but they want $40 for a 2nd generic remote that will just lock doors and start truck (it wont tell me if truck is running or not)
What should I do?

i have a viper system, not sure on the model number but it works up to 1000 feet. i paid 250 installed for it but had a friend do it, he tells me it would of costed 320 in his shop. got 2 remotes w/ unlock and lock feature. i had one on my old gas truck and loved it. to be honest with you IMO, dont waste your money. ill run my truck for 20 minutes on a 50 degree morning and when i get in it nothing has changed. my truck actually dont heat up untill i drive it for a few miles. but i supose if you have your mind set on it that price installed w/ fancy key pads isnt that bad...
ok. does it pay to get remote start? Being it a DIESEL and all and that I live in Caanda where it gets -10 to -45 degrees celcius OFTEn I think it would be wise. especially for in the morning to get it running for atleast 15 minutes before getting in. Its too bad you couldnt get the idle raised up a bit with these remote units...it should start and run normal for like 2 minutes then go up to about 900-1000 rpm for another 8 minutes or so.
The nice thing about the one I have is you can set it to start any time the temp hits below a certain temp...theres something I get alot of use out of here in Hell!!! I mean Arizona
I believe the viper has an option for a diesel that will start the truck on intervals during the night to keep the motor and oil from getting too cold.
Imagine being a guard in a parking lot and keep hearing a truck staru-up all night long and run for 15 minutes or so then shut off.

yes it does, it is nice for when I go back to Colorado as well as on really hot days here to, I can get into a nice cool truck instead of an oven.

If keeping the truck cool is the issue, there is a block warmer on our trucks that will do the trick for making it able to start. of course for running temps it might be a great investment.
I got a astrostart for mine and it works great does everything that you guys are talking(telss me truck is running, starts truck when to cold ect.)about and it cost around 650 to install. but i'm also in alaska
