Default New CTD

Hello,

Just purchased a 2007 Ram QC, CTD, 4x4 with Thunder Road package and it has the long bed. So much to learn since this is our first Diesel. For example which Diesel can you use, which is bad since we've seen a few pumps out there that say Bio on them so we avoid those for now.

Truck will be used mostly for short in town trips and pulling a 5000lb trailer twice a month for camping on weekends. Don't see any "hard" usage at any point as of yet.

Thanks and appreciate the site, hope I can find all the information we need.

Congratulations on your purchase. No doubt you will enjoy your new ram.

As for which fuel, it depends on which engine you have. Dodge used the 5.9L in the 2007 model year until about January, then switched to the new 6.7L Cummins. The 5.9 can use either Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD) or Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD). The 6.7L requires a steady diet of ULSD, as it has a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that is supposed to capture soot in the exhaust. LSD will supposedly plug the DPF and void the warranty. Cummins states that you can use B-5 (5% biodiesel) in its engines without any problems. Avoid the B-20, as it will void your warranty.

Enjoy!

Actually the sulphur in LSD fuel will create a high amount of sulfuric acid when the truck goes through a regeneration cycle which is a large part of why ULSD has to be used. But, as long as the pump says ULSD or "for use in 2007 or newer vehicles" you'll be fine. Dodge also gave the ok to run up to B20 (20% biodiesel) without voiding any warranties. Pretty soon you won't have to worry about LSD vs. ULSD since LSD is being refined less and less due to evironmental regulations that require newer trucks to run ULSD. Right now its almost impossible to find LSD anyway, but keep your eyes open just in case when you fill up.

Thanks for the replies. We came across a couple staions this weekend, one was B10 the other was B20 but we didn't fill on those since the book says 5% or less bio I believe.

So we headed over to CITGO (don't like them) and filled up instead in the truck lane and that pump had a sticker that the fuel was ok for 2007 vehicles.

Just don't want to screw it up and put something in the 5.9L that doesn't belong there. Love the truck, it's great to drive and I hope to have it awhile.

Don't run that bio diesel yet, I'm not so sure it is OK for our trucks, even if the book says it is. I have had pretty good luck with the ULSD so far. It is good that you got the 5.9L that way incase lsd is all that is available you will still be good to go.

Welcome to the forum, there is lots of goo info here. Ask anyhing you want, just don't listen to my answers

Dodge only recently released that B20 was ok for their trucks. I mainly saw it in Diesel Power and Diesel World I believe.

Guys, please correct me if my info is outdated but Daimler Chrysler gave the green light to use B20 fuel in the 2007 Dodge Ram diesel for government, military, and commercial fleet customers only. See link: http://www.biodiesel.org/resources/p...indodgeram.pdf See Question 12 on the Cummins Biodiesel FAQ: http://www.everytime.cummins.com/eve..._biodiesel.jsp

Daimler Chrysler and Cummins OKs the use of B5 fuel in all diesel engines.

Silverline, can you post a link please? As hildenja mentioned, I was under the impression that B20 is only approved for government, military, and commercial fleet customers only.

I was hoping nobody would ask this question. "hildenja" is a standard login I use that is a combination of my last name and initials. When I registered for the website I didn't realize my login would also be the name that's displayed to God and everybody. Maybe I'll have to make a donation to the site and ask to get a new login name.
