2006 2500 diesel getting 10 MPG
Hey guys, maybe someone can help me out. I have a 2006 2500 Big Horn QC with Long Bed, 4x4 and Cummins Diesel, with 10230 miles.
The dealer told me I would be getting about 17MPG I have notseen better then 11.5 on the highway, and maybe 10.4 ctiy.
I just assumed that the dealer was pulling my leg . I ran into a guyat lowes with the same identical truck and he told me he gets 18+ around town.
ThenI searched this forum only to find that this high mileage seems to be the norm, even with out modification.
Can anybody out their help me out and tell me why I can't get better then 11, is their something wrong with my truck and if so where and how do I find the problem.
Any help would sure be appreciated.

It'll get much better as it breaks in. When I first got mine at 17k I was getting 13mpg's and now i'm up in the low 20's on the highway and about 15 in town. Keep that fuel filter changed and run some Power Service fuel additive in the gray bottle. You can get it at walmart or about anywhere. But more than anything it'll just take some breakin in.

Thanks Zman , I appreciate the response. It stinks I have to wait that long, but it will be worth it. I will also get the additive you suggested.
Could you also suggest some big bang for the buck upgrades that may help in the mean time.
Like air filter, juice module, stuff like that.

Try posting this in the Diesel Forum for more technical answersbut here's a couple more ideas.
1. Low tire pressure will reduce milage. (and tire life)
2. Not all fuels are equal. If you are buying from a brand X station try a tank full from Texaco or Chevron and buy from a station that sells a lot of diesel. We experienced a 6 mpg drop when using fuel purchased at a brand X station on a recent trip.
3. Driving with the pedal to metal in stop and go driving "will" use more fuel.
4. Speed.Air resistanceincreases as the cube of velocity so while increasing speed from 65 mphto 75 mphis only a 15% increase in speedits a 55% increase in air resistance.

Change out all the filters or check to see if thier dirty, even thow the truck is brand new, the filters may have been expossed to less than clean conditions.
And My 06 hemi 2500 reg cab 4x4 6sp just pulled 22 mpg at 60 mph from Sweatgrass Montana to Leftbridge alberta, topper/dual ex only mods.
