First thing to watch for if it's a 98 1/2, is to make sure it doesn't have a "53 block." On the drivers side, crawl underneath and a large 53 is stamped on the block. These blocks are prone to cracking problems. Also, if this engine is modified, at very minimum, should have EGT and fuel pressure gauges. If truck has an automatic tranny, find out when/who rebuilt it. If it has a 5 speed, ask about the 5th gear nut falling off and if 5th gear was replaced with a fully splined shaft. Hope this helps!

53's didnt start untill '99 and ran through 01.

the 5th gear nut is a good point. . .also look to see if the lift pump has ever been replaced, if it has with what, and if the VP44 was also replaced.
