Default Synthetic vs. standard oil.

I have been thinking and researching about switching from Rotella 15-40 to a synthetic whether it be Rotella 5-40 synthetic or another brand. My question to everyone is what are everyone's experiences? Is there a real mileage benefit? Performance benefit? What are your oil changes? I run a volunteer rescue squad with a Ford F550 and F250. We receive calls at 3:00AM, -20'F, and run the trucks hard with no warn up time. We run Rotella 15-40 in both. Both vehicles are 2000 models. No problems with either! Thinking about switching my personnel vehicle and my squad's vehicles. Any comments will be appreciated! Thanks!

I run synthetic (amsoil 5W40) in my truck and 5W30 in the wifes Dakota. Her truck is garaged at home and at work. My truck (too big to get in garage) sits outside, I work in the far north and during the colder winter months, I have the joy of seeing -40 for up to a week at a time. The truck is "plugged-in" and starts up with no problem. Synthetic is the way to go for cold weather operating.

no problems here in the deep south. . .it may not get as hot as arizona, but it does get into the tripple digits. . .15-40 year round from amsoil, engine runs better, tranny shifts smoother, and I actualy gained about a half mile to the gallon just by swapping fluids over.

I run Amsoil 15w-40 Heavy Duty Diesel oil year round. I do a lot of heavy towing in the summer. No problems and longer drain interval. I'm a little bit farther north then Drew. I see around 0f a few days in the winter and around 100f a few days in the summer. I change the oil every 15k miles and the filter every 7500 miles. The longer drain interval makes up for the added cost of the oil.

I ran Synthetic engine oil in my Dakota and found that I only lost 5 psi per cylinder for 100,000 miles, therefor I believe that it also extended engine life. I am now running Rotella 5W40 synthetic in my 2005 Dodge Ram Cummins diesel. The truck appears to run quieter, as for Milage gains I am not sure. I have tracked the mileage, (hand calculated), since I have bought the truck. I can send you all of the data including servicing and mileage stats if you would like so that you can see for yourself. I am also sampling oil for an oil analysis, waiting for the last two samples results to come back. Drop me a line if I can help.

wait until you have at least 25k on the clock before switching to synth... give the motor plenty of time to break in. towing heavy will accelerate the breakin time...

I have heard some people say the same thing Steve, yet others say after the first interval it's cool. What is the general consensus here? I am about 150 miles from my first programmed oil change at 7500 per the manual and I am currently planning on going to DEO 5W-40 Amsoil.... Oh what is a boy to do?
