Transmission fluid temp question
Just looking thru some older posts here, and thought I'd add something. I have a deep dish pan on my ATS transmisson with a probe into the pan. It feeds directly to an Isspro gauge mounted on the dash. I also have the Edge Juice with Attitude and it's trans temp connection is directly to the truck computer. I've been running Amsoil ATF thru out the summer and have hit some extreme tempretures while towing in the mountain passes of Yellowstone. I found a 20 degree difference between the two gauges with the computer regeristing the higher reading. My total weight with the truck fueled up, 4 passengers, a 37' fifth wheel, and all the crap my wife and kids could stuff in camper came in at 26,665 lbs from a Cat Scale at a truck stop. The point I'm making is that I was pushing my limits and the transmisson was heating up there. Normal driving tempretures in the flat lands this summer averaged 165 to 185 degrees on the pan sensor. The greatest tempreture I recorded was 240 degrees on the computer with the pan temp being 220 degrees. These extremes were reached 3 or 4 time during the trip. I was wondering how the Amsoil Synthetic held up and today was my first 15,000 mile fluid change interval. I have to say that the fluid was not quite as red as the fresh fluid going back in, but by no means was it burnt. I was required by reason of the warranty to change the fluid at this interval, but because of the temps I reached, I thought it was due. When towing, I think its better to monitor the higher temp which is the computer. I'm not sure where it is being read from, maybe an internal sensor in the valve body. Good luck in your sensor location decision. Either way your making a good decision by monitoring the engine and transmisson parametors.
