The "key trick" will work on an '06. With the engine off, you turn the key to the on position (not start just run) then off and repeat till you get to the third on. Then leave it there and look at your odometer. It will have dashed lines all the way accross and then either display any codes that are present or say DONE.
I had my first scare the other day. I got in my truck and cranked it but nothing happened after cranking far longer than usual. I stopped and tried again and she fired up and the CEL came on for the rest of the day but eventually went off.
