Why are oil change intervals on diesels generally longer than for gassers? Oil in diesels seems to get black almost instantly. I would think since it gets dirty quicker it would be the opposite.

 

Gassers hold at the most 8 quarts, and thats a big gasser, the cummins holds 3 gallons, Thats one of the biggest reasons, along with larger finer filters and engine oil coolers, old diesels get sooty oil, but most look very clean at 3000 miles, Ive been changing mine every 6000 with rotella and im closing in on 400,000 miles and still running strong, my motor is as strong and clean as it was at 40,000 Long live the cummins!

 

Hey 6.. welcome to DF... congrats on approaching 400k. hope mine makes it that far.

 

When I changed my oil at 7,000 I did a UOA ( it was my first time using Amsoil 5w30) and my TBN came back at a healthy 10.03, so I threw out good oil for no reason. It doesn't sound like many here on the Dodge Forum are doing UOA's, so how do you know your not wasting good oil and your hard earned $$$ by changing your oil every 5,000 miles with out doing UOA?

 

Where do yo get your UOA's done at?

 

I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L CTD. If you look at the users manual, it specifically states that for normal operation, oil changes should occur every 15,000 miles. I've just passed 8600 miles on my truck and it still has the original oil in it. Seems wierd, but whatever. If thats what the manual says, thats what I'm doing.

 

I change mine every 5K with Rotella T and a Fleetguard filter.

Charles... the cost of the analysis for me is $25 bux... the current oil in my truck costs $35 bux + $10 for a filter... I'll bet it's the costs of the analysis and the ease of getting it done that has people just swapping the oil...

as for the 15k interval change... I went 15k on amsoil and on the 2nd analysis it came back contaminated. so I flushed it with mobil delvac after 1k and now have 3k on the current oil which is also delvac and the analysis I just did came back clean. so it gets to stay for now.

 

I don't have this done on my truck righ tnow, but have used these guys for tests at work. If you call these guys they'll send free samples bottles (8-pack) with USmail shipping for the sample included. Tell them what analysis you need (the standard analysis for oil change intervals is $15). They send you the results in about 1 week, then bill a week later (no cc accepted).
