milling out center hole in hubcap
Any of you guys out there have a lathe and could mill out the center of my front hubcaps? I am putting a manual lockout hub kit up front and need the hole milled out on the two front hubcaps. I need them PERFECTLY centered so it looks factory. I would also like the edges champhered so that it isn't sharp. A lot to ask but I know there are some good machinists out there!
They're plastic caps, right? Just measure carefully, mark your center, drill a pilot hole (1/4") should be fine. Then just get a hole saw the proper size, just go slow so it doesn't bind and crack. Clean it up with a small file, maybe some paint, should be good to roll. If you do find a machinist they can do a bang-up job as well.
I know that I can do it, but I wanted to keep this as "true" as possible. An experienced machinist would make sure that the cut was centered correctly.
I've got a lathe in my shop and in another thread I offered to do it for anyone on here for nothing. It's about a ten minute job. Just pay the shipping. I've got hubs on my truck and bored my own caps out. I would advise on not chamfering the edge. The chrome plating's only a very thin veneer about .010 thickness with much thicker dull gray plastic below it. I just bored my holes out then while it was still spinning in the lathe cleaned up the sharp chrome edge with a rat tail file. They look factory perfect.
