Engine Running While Fueling
Just went out to a Valero station that I don't usually go to. I left my engine running while fueling up.
I spent the limit on the card, but didn't fill up. (Only $65) Stuck the card back in and it wouldn't accept it a second time, so I tried a different card and started fueling again.
Almost as the tank was topped off, (another $24 later) the attendant comes on the intercom and tells me "Sir, please turn offyour engine." I said I was done, hung up the hose and left.
Does everyone turn off their engine at the pump?

I know a lot of people who drive diesels that don't turn off the truck during fueling...the reason for turning off a gasser is the fumes that are around while filling...and if something were to backfire....ka-boom...when was the last time you heard a diesel backfire...or can imagine diesel fumes exploding from a spark...if that were the case we'd all have spark plugs in our engines and the compression ratio would be a lot lower....
my $0.02 is that some dingbat in the store doesn't have a clue...but the station rule is turn off vehicle while fueling...
Real trucks don't have spark plugs.

i turn my off out of natural reaction but i see alot of guys leave them running. i would say thats the only place i do shut my truck off..... i leave it running EVERYWHERE! party stores, grocerie stores, bank, video store.. i dont know why but ilike to hear her running when i come out
the dump truck i drive to and from work is crazy during a fill up. i have to shut it, if i dont it dies. it holds 60 gallons or somthing and right b4 it gets full while its running it just dies. then i have to wait about 5 minutes b4 it wants to start and it only stays running after that 5 minutes at full idol in nuetral. there has to be dirt in the tank to make it do that but who has time to drain the fuel and clean it?

simply put it's not that they are dumb, the store i worked at in high schoool you could be held liable if for example you don't stop a pump that's running when they have the engine on and kaboom. be a real ****tty way to get into a lawsuit but it can happen. that's probably why they wanted you to shut it off.
I actually think it's a law in Ohio. I still leave it run.
You shouldhave left a little soot print on the front door.

gas fumes combust easly that why you can have you gas engine running but diesel takes more to ignite the fumes/fuel, think about this the big 18 wheeler rigs idle all the time no matter what they are doing.
