The sad thing is with the 50 cent premium for diesel nowadays, it would cost the same to get about 38 mpg out of a gasser which isn't that hard. But the diesel would be pretty cool.

My brother has a TDI. It does get close to 50mpg. He did however have a problem with it. It seems that at least 1 motor mount is part of the block casting. Somehow his cracked, and the only way to fix it was to get the block rewelded. This probably does not occur much, but if you plan on more power you may have trouble. I have driven it, and it is a very fun car to drive. Plenty of power and can't beat the mileage.

Thanks all, I let you know. It'll be my wife's daily driver if we get it. I don't think she wants to smoke any intersections, just get good mileage.

well in reply to jedrph there are only two reasons whythe ear breaks off... one is someone did a waterpump or timing belt and dident tighten the bolts that hold the alum mount on then it rattles around and cracks... two if you hit the oil pan hard enough it does it...ive beatin the crap out of many a TDI vw and more power isent gonna cause any probs with mounts... the only issue would be upgrading to polygraphite.

Go get a maint schedule and price menu from your local VW dealer and ask about ease of service appointments before you make your decision. I'm not trying to talk you out of it but check those things out before you make your decision.
