RE: If you had to start from scratch
Knowing what I know now (not a ton, but getting there ,) if I had $3000 to spend, I would look at a new turbo and see what i could do with the tranny. I believe you can get into a turbo for about $1000-$1200, valve body ~ $400 and a torque converter ~ $1000. Heat seems to be the biggest enemy of these motors and anything you can do to move more air, it's gonna help. If you wanted to get some power mods, I would replace the tranny upgrades with the Edge Juice with Attitude. Great built in protection and has all the gauges you'll need. So, here's my list:
Turbo
Gut the intake tube and new drop in filter
Open up the exhaust - muffler/cat delete
Edge Juice/Attitude.
And if left over - tranny upgrades.

RE: If you had to start from scratch
Best mod I did, was also the first...sorta. I first installed a set of wheel to wheel Tubular nerf bars with the Mopar name on them. That lasted about as long as it took me to put them on to take them off.
Then I added Amp Research Power Steps.
A little bit spendy at $1100, but I like them a whole lot better than the nerf bars, plus the wife and kids can actually get into the truck withoutstraining to get in.
The Power Stepsactually drop low enough to be functional as a step (unlike the nerf bars I first bought), and are far enough away from the body to keep you from kicking the paint everytimeyou step up (also unlike the nerf bars). PLUS when you close the door they move out of the way and stow completely up under the body, so nothing sticking out or down from the truck.
The only downside I can find is if you are a fat guy like me, you gotta shut the doors to crawl under the truck. Yes I am THAT FAT!
I would highly recommend the Power Steps to ANYONE that was looking to add nerfbars and could afford the extra cost.
