Default crank sensor

I posted a while ago about my truck shifting back and forth between 3rd and overdrive when driving at around 45 mph. All of the responses I got led to a bad ground. I took my truck in to the mechanic and he is trying to tell me I need a new crank sensor. I have never heard of this part. He also said that is the reason the truck makes a clunk or a ping noise when shifting into reverse. Has anybody heard of this part? Where is it located and how easy is it to fix. The mechanic is telling me $700 to fix this thing.

Try this link. I think this is what you're looking for.

I would find a second opinion. The crankshaft position sensor (part # 5015488AA) retails for $93.00. And is a fairly easy change. I don't see the crank sensor having anything to do with the problems that you have. If the crank sensor was "bad" it should set a diag code. You should check the battery ground.

The noise going into reverse is most likely a ujoint. I would change them all out seeing as its only $50 to do all three on the rear driveline. And that shifting problem is still probably a bad ground. If you have a few simple tools you can fix all of these yourself in less then a day and save some money.

The U-joints are all tight. Any other ideas?

tight as in "bolted down" tight or "they have no play and do not chatter" tight????

U joints need to be checked for play and chatter.

According to the mechanic, the u-joints are fine. But then again, he did try to tell me that I needed a crank sensor. Seems weird. I did get under the truck myself and try to move the drive shaft around to listen for play in the u-joints. They did not seem to move to me.

Is your truck still hunting for gears?

Have you cleaned up your grounds?
