DC approved oil but use cheap oil
I have got a real question? If these 6.7L engines are going to be requiring oil changes every 2000-3000 miles why are we concerned with using the best of oils?
The manual says something about 7,500 miles, as I recall. I would disregard the overhead display if it's telling you to change at anything less than 6,000, unless you're doing a lot of short trips or extended idling that will shorten the oil life. My 'OIL CHANGE REQUIRED' display just came on a week ago with nearly 6,000 miles since I changed oil and reset the computer. I am planning to change it this weekend and send in a sample for oil analysis to see how it's holding up. If it's still in good shape I will extend my next oil change accordingly.
Indicators and long oil change intervals are a nice feature, but consider how long you'll own your truck. Maintenance is truely a cheap insurance. I made my own service schedule based on the factory's... just peared down to what meets my needs and keeps me feeling comfortable. My maintenance habits may be considered zealous to some, but at the end of the day, it's what you'rehappy with.
Cumminz,
If its your first oil change then I would dump the factory oil between 1500-3,000 miles or when the light comes on to change it unless you know for sure how old your oil is. After that the best way to know how long your oil is good for is to do several UOA's and see what shows up in the reports.
A good example, I changed my oil after 7 months and 7,000 miles, I also did a UOA, and it came back with a TBN of 10.01 so I threw out dam good oil. So you can see Dodge is not always right about how well oil holds up because by doing a UOA I found out how good my oil was. If you don't do UOA you have no way to know for sure how well your oil is doing its job, plain and simple!

You want to use only LOW ASH oil in a 6.7. Anything less and you not going to be happy with the performance of the diesel. Why would you spend that much money on a vehicle and then cheap out on maintance to protect them. If you don't use approved engine oil, you run the risk of negative effects on the engine and the warranty...
From the manual....
ENGINE OIL - DIESEL ENGINES
Use only Low Ash Diesel Engine Oil meeting standard MIL-2104C or API Classification CJ-4/SM (5.9L), or CJ-4 (6.7L), or higher that meets Cummins CES 20081 Standards.
Low ash diesel engine oil is REQUIRED for the 6.7L engine, use MOPARĀ® MaxPro15W40 6700 Diesel DPF diesel engine oil, or equivalent.
