Default Is it safe to use a chip while towing?

Dont ask me why but lots of people i hear from say to tow stock. I dont get it. if you have an extra 50-100 HP chip why not tow with it? even if you dont lay into pedal how can it hurt? I have a stock 2004.5 cummins now. If i get a AFE stage 2 intake, Delete my cat and get a edge juice attitude and set it to level 2 or 3 how can it hurt my towing or my mpgs? I dont get it unless im stupid

If you have a manual tranny you can put a little hurt on your clutch towing heavy loads with the extra power and if you have an auto the extra power will put additional strain on your tranny. If you chip has a tow setting I would use that, if not i'd tow on a lower lever so that you don't chance hurting anything. Tranny's are expesive to replace and cost a lot to rebuild so always keep that in mind.

More power = more heat. So it is very improtant to watch your gauges closely. I generally tow on the lowest setting on my edge. If I see temps where I don't like them, I'll turn the edge off.

ok so could i tow on a low setting on a edge juice attitude? or would there be a better chip out there for me? I want strictly a MPG gaining chip wioth towing ability if possible. I dont need power or acceleration when empty.

First I will be adding a AFE stage 2 intake and a CAT delete. Then i will shop for a chip but which 1?Bullydog power pup, edge juice, workhorse, smarty, etc...

try the quadzilla xzt. its 65 h/p and 125tq i think..... its just enough power to pep the truck up, you get a little better mileage and im sure it would be alot safer not being adjustable than a higher powered module

i want a unit that is proven and reliable. if i get a high setting module i just wont use the higher settings.so im not worried about smoking tranny.Id like something with boost info, tranny temp, pyro etc....unless i get a cheap chip and add those gauges extra?

On my 2002 6-speed HO 4X4 2500 SRW, I towed with it with these mods to the truck, FASS, EDGE, bigger injectors, AFE, 4' turbo back. The last mod I did was the injectors , it was like adding the edge all over again, it did require me to invest in a hd clutch as it would slip in 5 and 6, once the clutch was done, the edge on max setting ( only 3 setting ) I could tow and tow no problems at all ( towing anywhere between 6K and 12K loads)MAN I MISS THAT POWER.

On my new truck 2007 5.9 auto Dually 4X4, I have these mods done ( so far ) AFE stage 2, 4" turbo back, cat and muffler delete, dual exhaust, Edge Juice ( no attitude), hd tranny cooler with temp controlled fan, EGT, Boost and Tranny gauges, plus varius suspension mods for the weight of my truck camper.
When I tow with this girly truck, I leave theJuice on setting #2 most times, but to switch to the high power settings sometimes but the egt's climb faster on that setting, as you know your right foot controls the egt's nothing else but your right foot.
My trade off is just controlling my right foot and lots of power when required.

I have an edge with afe a magnaflow and fass with injectors. My EGTs sky rocket is i set it on anything over 3 hauling a low boy with one rock crawler. I set it on 3 or 4 just to see what it got to coming up a part of I- 40 on my way to TN and I could see 1200 or 1300 easily! But on 1 or 2 (which is the tow setting) I never see over a grand! I like to use the power I paid for! :-) if it doesnt heart my truck!

I use the Hypertech Programmer and tow 12k-14k 15-20 weekends a year. With it set on the max setting, my EGTs will get about 1300 when going up a big, long hill, and I have to back off the go pedal a little bit. Other than that it has been working great. I set the program to the max setting the day I got it and have never turned it back down. I have had it set this way for over 2 years now.
