I used Rotella synthethic 5w40 at 10,000 miles and Amsoil 5w30 HDD at 13,000. So I see no reason why you have to wait for 40,000 before using synthetic oil. I will say I broke in my engine with some weight in the bed and 2, 33+ hr non stop drives not counting fuel stops during the first 6,000 miles.
