odd smell on startup
Ok, this one has me baffled so I'll turn to the experts.
Last couple of days I've had a smell on startup. Happens only when the truck is cold like when it's set all day at work or overnight. I do not notice it if I shutdown and restart warm.
Only lasts for a couple of minutes. Best description is it smells kind of like a hot brake or clutch.... but the truck has been completely cold and had not even moved when I've smelled it.
Doesn't really smell like hot electrical though, had I been running I would think it was a brake smell. No odd noises or vibrations and the truck is running great.
Anyone experience anything like this?

What you described is what I smell every time my truck is running. It's my cat. converterand it keeps you from smelling what a diesel should smell like.
I am assuming you still have the cat and if so, I am surpised this is the first time you've smelled it.

Well, it's not smelling like propane to me. Had I smelled this on the road, I would swear that I was smoking my clutch. But since it's on start after sitting overnight I don't think that's the case. And would the cat smell go away after a couple minutes? I would think that it would be pretty consistant.

I can be behind a truck with the cat still on and the exhaust has the same smell you described.

Hmm... interesting. Guess I have one way to know then, remove the kitty and see what happens. Been thinking about it anyway, so you just gave me the excuse
