Default Aftermarket Air Filter question about AFE

I would like to get a good aftermarket air filter for my truck. I think my choice will be AFE (but pricey). Now my ? is which 1 to get? There is AFE stage 1, AFE stage 2, AFE stage 2 proguard 5, AFE stage 2 pro guard 7, AFE stage 2 mega cannon. All are between $300-$450 US. Which is better or the best of them? and if any1 knows of a company that makes similar filters with similar results please feel free to speak. Thanks and a merry xmas.

I don't know what kind of power you're looking to make but, the stock filter box is good for at least 500hp. You can get a better aftermarket OEM replacement filter and should be good to go. If you really just want to get one you mentioned....

The difference between stage I and II is, stage I has a smaller filter with a 4" opening. stage II comes with the down pipe and a larger filter. The down pipe tapers from 6" to 4".

the proguard is a " dry media filter " Same difference, one comes with the down pipe and is larger, the other has no pipe and is smaller

I haven't seen the mega cannon but, I'm sure it's probably more than you need. As long as you can get 750cfm's out of your filter, you're good. Larger turbos require 1000cfm's and more.

AFE is a great product IMO but so are some of the others. Just stay away from K&N in a diesel.

ok. ill be running edge juice attitude level 1-3 ( i have hot unlock) but I have stock tranny yet. I will be upgrading tranny in time. I will be deleting muffler and cat and putting in a aero 4040xl or something like it. And will be adding a glacier 392 or airdog100. With that mentioned will I need a aftermarket air box?

IMO no. You still have a stock turbo I assume and that's what will cause the need for more air flow. You can drill out some 3" or 4" holes in the stock box to create more flow. You would need to gut the tube down to the turbo also... if you didn't know it has plastic fins in it that are a obstruction. Geno's I believe has a tube you can connect to the stock box to run down to connect where you're fog lamps are.

What you will probably need is a turbo. I imagine running the HOT on the higher setting will get you some EGT's. The aftermaket filters are cool to have and if you want one... go for it. They're kinda like the intake manifolds though in that.... youo really get no gain for the cost.

you mean intakes and intake filters give you no gain for the cost? not even 1 HP...they claim 15 HP

can't always believe everything you read. Just like what i've been telling you.... I could be coco but, I am speaking from experience and you're welcome to do your own research. You might gain a hair more hp, better spooling and a slight drop in EGT's but, IMO nothing you're going to notice. You can barely see it on a dyno.

Many companies claim things to get there product sold.... it doesn't always mean they're right. Just because a box says 15hp, your injectors say 150hp, your intake says 20hp and your box says 150hp doesn't mean you can add them all together and come up with 335hp more.

the one thing i notice every time I go from my stock airbox back to the AFE setup is how the motor runs from a daily driver stand point. with my AFE on the motor revs easier and cools down quicker (egt's @ cooldown). Too many people focus on dyno numbers and forget how a motor is going to run for them day to day. sure it's nice to know what power the motor is putting out for bragging rights but from a daily driver standpoint, it's nice to know what a mod is going to do for you.

When I put on my AFE with the stock exhaust, the motor breathed easier to a point, mileage didnt change much, might have gone down some (I'd have to go back& look at my data to tell for sure)... egt's dropped quicker before shutting down. when I went to a straight thru exhaust setup (no kitty) and the 30" magnaflow, I for sure lost 1~1.5 mpg, turbo took longer too spool but the egt's dropped like a rock (AFE intake). When I put back on the stock airbox for comparison I gained back 1.0 mpg consistantly but the egt's took longer to drop. Later in the summer, in came the aero 4040 where the kitty used to be... now the turbos spools up quicker, egt's take longer (AFE intake) to drop and the mileage is comparable to the stock setup. The egts drop quicker than stock with this setup.

Triton has mentioned that the intakes dont do much for HP/TQ, I dont have any dyno numbers to say yes or no but my own experience on this subject is right after putting mine on and driving down a regular route 2 lane road, passing was much easier and the tranny did not downshift as much if at all. that was indicating to me that in the 1500~2000 rpm range there was a bump in power. The other day I had looked at my mileage spread sheet from back then and it looked to me that the mileage went down with the intake on. I'm thinking I might go back to the stock intake manifold to see if there is a difference in mileage and to also remind myself of how the motor runs with the swap.

Like triton was saying, you cant believe everything you read, real world feedback is much better IMO... should you get one? it's up to you to decide which one will work best for you and the plans you have for your truck...

thanks steveo. good info. I want to go with a aero4040xl I think and remove muffler and cat. It just makes sense to me to have some muffler with least restriction as possible.ill have to decide on a filter yet whether it be homemade one, AFE, or S&B or swiss cheese the stock one and drop in a square aftermarket filter. Also whats the diff between stage 1 and stage 2 filters? which is better for canadian climate?

dam... 3rd times a charm??? tried 3x to reply & each time DF comes back with a cookie error.

the stage 2 has the proguard 7 filter... more layers for filtering. it also has a 6" flange vs a 4.5" (I think is what it is). read my afe cleaning thread tacked in the dIY thread at the top of the forum... worth the read.
