I currently have a 99 ram 1500 5.9 v8. I think the transmission just went out. I was looking at a 04 cummins diesel that i was thinking of buying, but now, im worried it may b bad to me as well. i hav heard people saying how bad dodge is in general but damn they are nice and they seem to be good trucks to me. I think im just insecure at the moment, anyone want to help me? I dont know what to do...

 

We all love our motors that's for sure....there are parts of our trucks that everyone one of us would like to 'change'....granted they are all different for each of us

Give us some more info on that 04 your looking at and we can tell ya all sorts of things.

 

the 48re does have its nuances, however it is a pretty decient unit in stock form. as long as the engine doesnt produce more than 60-75hp over stock it'll hold up. however go over that and the torque converter will begin to slip. go over 100 and you start running the risk of welding the clutch disks together from heat. and speaking of heat, if the tranny temps are kept cool it will run very well.

a valve body upgrade is probably the best thing that can be done to the 48RE.

since you are saying it is an 04, do you know if it is an 04.4 or 04.5???

the 04.5's have the 600 engine, the 04.4's have different engine options and are not fully electronic.

 

well i was looking at an 04 but i found a better deal on an 06. Its got less miles and its a 4 door long bed truck. looks nice. I think im going to get it
