Default RE: fuel filter replacment

Just replaced mine today with a new Napa Gold. It takes about ten minutes from opening the drain petcock to priming the new filter. I think the filter cost me about $8 at fleetfilter.com. The recommended filter change interval is 15,000 miles. Most posts i've read say that people are changing it sooner. This time I waited 20,000 miles. This is too long IMHO. The filter was completely black. Usually I change the filter at 10,000 miles, and the filter has black pleat tips and somewhat dirty folds.

Drain the fuel by opening the yellow drain petcock on the bottom of the fuel filter housing.
Wipe around the edge of the filter cap to clean any accumulated debris.
Remove the filter cap with a 1 1/8" socket or wrench
Remove the filter from the fingers in the cap
Remove and replace the O-ring on the cap
Clean the dirt/debris from the bottom of the fuel filter cannister
Install the new filter by inserting it into the fingers in the lid and screwing the lid back on the housing
Recommended Tq for the lid is 25 Ft-lbs according to Haynes for my model.
Close drain petcock and prime the filter. For 2003 and later models turn the key to ON and give the engine a bump (turn the key to start momentarily, and release) the lift pump will now run for 25 seconds.

They say to start the truck after one prime cycle. I do 2 prime cycles just to be sure that the fuel cannister is full.

This filter is quite simple to change and will be a nice step in familiarizing yourself with your Cummins motor.

IIRC your Napa Gold is still a 10-micron filter; the EX is a 7-micron. FYI, both Dodge and Cummins want us to be using a 7-Micron fuel filter. If you want a better fuel filter then buy a Baldwin PF7977 its 5 micron and it exceeds the Cummins spec. BTW, many fuel filters are not very good at separating the water out of your fuel like the Baldwin or Cummins/Dodge filters do.

You have to take a wheel off to changes a fuel filter ? The designer must be a moron !
