Jump Starting
Maybe a stupid question, but since I'm new to diesels, I was wondering if there any special directions for jump starting the truck? I notice that there are two batteries under the hood. Does it matter which one I hook the cable to? Also, will this be a problem for the vehicle jump starting me, since the diesel engine requires quite a bit of energy to get going? Lastly, what about jump starts in cold weather when the wait for engine light typically comes on.

I would also disconnect the jumper cables before attempting to start the truck. I think the grid heater draws about 150 amps (i may be a little high there) while they are running. With the current draw you could quite easily turn a thin or cheap cable into a nice bright heating element.
Another bit of advice from my bad experience is that if possible disconnect each battery and test each battery. One of my batteries was dead dead (bad cell) and all of the charging was useless. After disconnecting the offending battery, charging the good one, it started on one battery.

I plan to get a pair of yellow top optimas, but I'm going to wait till the new pair goes out (dealer replaced them). Not proactive, but cost effective

Hopefully you never encounter that. be proactive and grab a couple yellow top optima's. I would just hook it up to either batt, let it charge for a while and then go for it.
