Default Dodge CTD Conversion/Replacement

I am pondering the idea of putting a CTD in my 86 Dodge 1/2 ton PU. I have 1 ton axles in it with an 8" susp. lift. Do you guys know how difficult it would be to put a newer CTD in the existing 340's place. I was looking at maybe a 2000-2002 year engine. What should I go with if anything different. This truck would only see everyday driving and only light towing (boat). I am looking at the CTD mostly for the WOW effect, the sight of black smoke, and the sound of the diesel engine. I can't really afford a new truck, soI would like to buid up the one I have. Thanks guys, looking forward to any replies with help......

get a 12 valve instead and work the engine over a little bit. . .370 injectors, upgraded turbo, and play with the injector pump a bit.

the reason I say go with the 12 valve is the P7100 injector pump is much more reliable than the VP44 injector pump, plus the limit of the P7100 still realy hasnt been reached where as the VP44 tops out around 6-700hp on fuel only, there are some guy's with well over 1000hp on the P7100 pump. also the 12 valve is fully mechanical and the only wireing you need is for the fuel shutoff solenoid. the 24 valve of the year you are looking at would need alot of hookups and wires run.

also, change out the gears, 4.56's are way high for the cummins. I have 4.10's in my axels and turn 2300 just to run 70mph. 3.73's are probably going to be your best bet. as far as tranny. . .get your hands on a 47RE, that will allow you to have a good running gear in over drive while on the highway.

now that I look back on what you currently have, if you plan on running all that meat you may need to have 4.10's.

You would probably be better off just buying a truck with a diesel already in it. You are going to have to do a lot of work to make a diesel work in a gas truck. First off the engine is bigger and weighs more than a gas engine. You'd have to beef up the suspension in the front plus do a lot of extra things. Like add a second battery, add an intercooler in front of the radiator and upgrade the fuel delivery system. Like Drew said, if you go with a 24v your gonna have tons of electronics and a computer to deal with.
