I would have to agree with BadRam that if you need a larger suv, a 7.3 Excursion is the way to go. But they are gonna be just as much price wise as a 6.0 Excursion. People are realizing that the 6.0 is a junk engine, and as such are grabbing up all the 7.3's. Every time we get a 7.3 pickup on our used lot it is gone within a couple days whereas the 6.0's will sit there for weeks. And I've seen some ragged out 7.3's selling for over $20k. Now smaller suv's, like mentioned before the Jeeps, you can get just about any Mercedes SUV with a diesel now, also up until this year I believe you could get a V10 TDI Volkswagen Toureg and that motor is a beast, something like 300hp and 500 ft/lbs of torque with 20-25mpg! Or if you wait, the new 4.5L Duramax in the suburbans and I think I read that engine was going in the H2 Hummers as well. Ford will have a diesel Expedition in 09, and audi is supposed to have a diesel Q7 sometime soon. The future for diesel is looking very bright, so waiting might net you something better than you can get now.

Sticky, Find yourself a 2000 to 2002 Ford Excursion. The03 to 07 have the 6.0 engine that is a poor design. The 00 to 02 have the 7.3 and it is a good one. I have friends that have enjoyed 2 to 3 hundred thousand miles with little trouble. Look on Auto Trader.com. Just remember to get the 7.3 when you are buying. Good luck

VW is also coming out with the Tiguan compact SUV with the new 2.0L TD. Supposedly its going to be about the size of a Rav-4 or CR-V. They're also claiming some upscale features such as automatic parallel park system like the Lexus LS460 has. I think they're claiming around 25/30 mpg for the gasser, so the diesel should be around 35/40mpg. I'm guessing prices will start around 25k
