Default Carb Cleaner for Foggy Headlights

So Im at my buddies shop today checking the front end on my wifes suburban. And I asked him how to get the fog of of the headlights..... He grabbed a can of carb cleaner and sprayed some on a clean rag and Walllla!! they looked new again. The reason Im telling this is because new ones are pretty costly. they sell a cleaning kit do do the same thing but this works better and is much cheaper.

Interesting... never tried that. You can also get a little bottle of lens restorer from most auto parts stores. I think I paid $4 or so for mine. It's basically a high-grit polishing compound to remove the yellowing or fogging from plastic lenses. Worked well on my old lenses.

Cool... I'll have to try that next time. I've been using Plastix with great results. if the carb cleaner works and wont damage the plastic, it'll be one less cleaning product for the shelf.

I spend a lot of time lurking at Autopia.org, which is a forum for car detailing pros and enthusiasts. I have learned a lot about detailing from these guys. The subject of headlight polishing comes up often. The consensus is thatusing carb cleaner, brake fluid, toothpaste, etc, is a temporary fix at best for frosted headlight lenses.

Here is a post from a professional detailer who makes headlights look like new. Here is his process:

Wetsand with Micromesh, starting at 400 grit and finishing with 4000 grit
Polish with a rotary polisher, wool pad, and polishing compound
Finish with orange foam padand Menzerna Final Polish II (very fine polishing compound)

I'd be careful with the carb cleaner. Some of those solvents will dissolve plastics.

That's too much work.

I thing I have to add to that, dont mix products. If you start with Micromesh, use there products until your done. I dont think you need to start with 400 grit unless you have some really deep scratches in there. Starting with 1000 to 3000 usually gets the job done.
