Default biggest tire for 17" rim

I know this isn't the first time this has been addressed in these forums, but I wanted to get some of your experiences with bigger tires on a stock 17X8 rim. I have been told that I can't run anything larger than a 285, but I am thinking differently. The ideal tire (for me) would be a lot taller than what I see on current trucks. It seems the trend now is not only to run taller tires, but wider ones too. Back in the day, you could buy tires that were essentially the same width as what was stock, but a lot taller. That is what I am looking for. Any suggestions?

Lotta guys say you can run a 35x12.5 on the stock 17x9 but recommend a levelin kit, thats what I got planned, froger has done it with stock rims said it worked great...
Thats the biggest I know, wheel spacer or different offset could get ya a 35x13.5 on there....later Rootercycles

the main problem you run into is the load rateing. with such a large tire, you have to go down on load rateing. I believe you can find 37's that will fit on these 17" rim's. . .however if your going that big, I would reccomend a minimum rim diameter of 20" this will keep things from wobbline too much when the side wall flexes.

i am running a 35x12.50r17 cooper discoverer stt (on stock wheels) with NO leveling or lift kit. the tires do rub slightly on the lower control arms when steering wheel is turned to full lock. rancho makes a 4" lift kit which gives you new upper and lower control arms and will allow you to run 37's on your stock wheels. goodyear wrangler mt/r comes in a 37x12.50r17 with a load range E. trucks with the 4" kit and 37's look real good.

305/65/17s here on stock 17x8 rims. No leveling kit and no rubbing problems at all. Any bigger would probably need leveling or lifting.

Yupe I used to run ProComp AT 315's on my stock rims w/ a 2 1/2 inch leveling kit. No rub on hard turn. No problems what so ever.

I did forget to mention that I have a CAGE 2" leveling kit. I want to run 305's but don't want them to rub. I have noticed that most 305's are very wide. I want the ratio a little bit different in that I want them tall, but not as wide. My rim is an 17X8 which also limits the width of the tire I can run.
