Get ready for commercial insurance, depending on where you live. My Bro-In-Law bought a Ford Power stroke Cab/Chassis with a flat bed brand new from the dealer. They got it home and the next day got the new policy info and found out they are now paying over $400 per month on just that truck. Nothing he could do or say to change it either. In his case though, it is in the VIN # that it is cab/chassis , case closed so he sold it at a loss.My point is, I know of other folk that had this happen also. Most insurance companies will classify it as a commercial vehicle if it has a flat bed. My wife works for State Farm Insurance and we talked about this a while back and she confirmed it for me.I would definitely call your insurance company and ask before you do it.Then again, I might have done all that typing for nothing, is it already a commercial vehicle?

I doubt it would change the insurance rate of the vehicle since it is already registered as a passenger/private use vehicle.

all you are doing with it is giving yourself more clerance for your 5vr. . right.

I have my wife looking at this thread with me and here is what she says.........If you modify the truck in any way that increases the gross vehicle weight capacity to exceed the limit for a passenger vehicle (10,000lbs ) then it isnow is classified as a commercial vehicle. And if you add a utility bed, it is considered a commercial vehicle. If this is indeed true, then there must be tons of 3500's and 2500's on the road that have added air bags or overloads that increase the gross to over that allowed for a passenger vehicle. But the odds of anyone crawling under your truck to check are slim to none. But add an obvious item such as a flat bed or utility bed and eyebrows will raise if your insurance finds out.She said each company is different but she has dealt with the issue before and State Farm is firm on that policy and it's hard to sway them. Definitely call them and ask before you do it. She also said that if you were to get in an accident, you could be denied coverage if the adjuster wanted to be an *** and push the issue. I'm just trying to help here, I have seen it happen with my own eyes so I know it is a possibility. Just cover your *** and ask before you do it.
