93 w250
Sorry guys new to this forum, I couldnt find anyway to search previous threads. Ive just acquireda 1993 w250 with a 5.9 cummins, and Im worried about the auto trans holding up. First off which trans Is It? I believe Its the 518, but Im not sure, the truck Is intercooled Ive heard that makes a difference and has overdrive. I plan on using this truck for towing and hauling and Id like to be able to select and hold gear ranges. Id like to know If anyone knows If things like transpak kits are available for this thing, also my column shifter Is all worn out, soId like to Install a lokar floor shifter. I guess my real question Is If I do have the 518 Is there stuff like this available? Ive heard the 518 Is the same as the 727 except of the overdrive unit on the back, so In theoryI could buy a 727 floor shifter and transpak kit and Id be set? Im fairly mechanical, but new to dodges.
You in fact do have the A518 transmission. TransGo and Sonnax make kits for the valve-body that allow the typical tweaking including the Shift Command feature (allows downshifting to any gear at any speed and holding that gear).
The floor shifters commonly available will work just fine. Your column shifter is no doubt like mine was. There's a "Torque Lever" that basically connects the column linkage to the transmission's shift lever. It's seen in the left-hand side of this image. ~

There's nylon bushings at each end of the shaft as well as a couple for the linkage ends. Mine were wallowed out. Further, my shaft was heavily worn where the transmission linkage connected. ~

A major improvement of the non lock-up A518 such as ours is to replace the stock/OEM torque converter to a tighter design. In rough terms, ours is only good for about a 60% connection between the engine and transmission. All the major trans builders such as SunCoast, Goerend Bros, DDT, etc offer better units that are of approx 89% ~ 91%. Custom units can be built as well. With this improvement alone, you'll see 100*F ~ 200*F lower transmission temperatures, and an approx 2mpg increase. Well worth it.
To make your truck more responsive, consider replacing your turbocharger's18cm exhaust housing with a later model 16cm (many 2nd gen drivers replace theirs so they can be found very cheap). This will greatly improve the turbo's spool-up.
Further, strongly consider replacing theinjection pump's governor spring. Stock, it has the fueling start to roll off at about 2800rpm. For about $16, you can install a spring that begins fuel roll-off at about 3200rpm. BIG throttle responsiveness improvement.
Hope this helps.
