Default Poor performance at start up...

I have an '01 Cummins 24V Turbo. When I start her up, there is no power for 2-3 min. or the first mile or so. I just replaced the fuel pump and it had no effect on the problem. She also is not responsive between 45-50 MPH unless I kick the peddle to the floor. Any thoughts?

For one it's not a good idea to crank up a cold motor and then drop the hammer. Drive the truck easy until it gets warmed up so seals can seat properly.

Thats what I would say it is, probably just cold. I know every morning at work when I go to start a truck to pull it in, no power at all til it warms up, course thats powerstrokes they dont' have alot of power anyways.

I'm wondering about your transmission. . .the startup problem sounds more like you have fluid leaking out of your torque converter, then the 45-50 mph deal may be linked to an electrical problem of the tranny not unlocking the torque converter properly.

first check the main grounds to the frame off the battery and make sure it is not corroded. also check the battery conections and make sure the terminals are clean.

we can work this one problem at a time, the 45-50mph problem may be the easiest to fix, the no power at startup may be a bit more tricky. you could always start the truck up, put it in neutral for a min or to to let the pump push fluid though the torque converter. I say this since the tranny pump does not operate while the truck is in park. yet it does operate while the tranny is in neutral.

Not to jack this thread but..... Why did Dodge design their trannys this way? and does it affect all automatic trannys or just certain ones? It seems to me like this was a dumb idea, but maybe there is a good reason for it?

Haha, thanks Drew. Just rub it in! I'd give up 48RE for a NV5600 any day!

atleast you can easily find parts for your 47/8RE's. . .parts for the NV5600 are getting hard to come by and more and more expensive since New Venture went out of buisness. New Process bought all the patents New Venture held and has not machined a single new part for any New Venture transmission/transfer.
