Cold Weather Tranny Problems?
I read the thread about the Allisons and the cold weather issues. It's been very cold up here the past week (-45C).Two of the guys I work with own Duramax's and have the same problem as the thread mentioned. Both of there trucks have been leaking tranny fluid. One of the guys thinks his tranny cooler froze up andbelieves he cooked his tranny fluid. Has anyone hear of any problems with the Dodges tranny's in servere cold weather. I drove mine to and from work everyday through the cold snap and didn't seem to have any problems. The only things I noticed was it never really warmed up (no surprise) and there's alot more noises. It seems to "howl" when you step on it. Tire noise maybe? Anyway, just wondering if anyone has had or heard of cold weather issues with the Dodges.

Dodge trannys don't circulate fluid in park, bonus I believe. When its that cold I usually drive the first few kms around 40 to 50kph. I suspect on the allis with the tranny fluid circulating through the cooler and the with the fan running she gets pretty cold, most of the failed trannys had cooler line leaks or blown coolers, just a few had cracked cases. She was pretty cold up there last week -45C for about a week straight and don't forget the windchill!!!
The only problems I've read about at very cold temps is from the power steering pump not liking the cold. But to correct the PS pump cold fluid flow problem they just changed the fluid out with Amsoil ATF+4. Being it has a pour point of -63 below zero it flows better in cold temps then standard Mopar ATF. If your worried about your trans then it may be a good idea to change out your trans fluid to Amsoil.
