Factory Trailer Wiring
I haven't been on the forum in quite a while, too many things going on at school (I teach basic auto service to special needs kids) and too much time on the 2 "new" vintage cars...
Anyway, I just bought a 28 foot Haulmark enclosed trailer, and have a question or two !
I have an '05 ram 2500 4x4 4 door CTD truck with the factory trailer towing prep package. I assume (bad word, makes an "***" out of "u" and "me" ) that it does not have a built in trailer brake controller. The question is does it have a 12 volt auxzillery power wire running thru thru, or to, trailer connector? You know to charge the winch battery while your driving, etc.
The truck pulled the trailer down the parkway at 70MPH, no problem, and seemed to stop all right, but I'll be in the Pennsylvaina mountains most of this comming summer with 2 vintage cars in the trailer.
Another thing, have you all had a drastic drop in fuel milage since around Christmas time? Towing my little 12' box trailer, I've dropped about 3 1/2 mpg on the overhead. while I know that doesn't give an accurate fuel milage reading, you can still tell if you are doing better or worse on milage by it.
Thanks !

there is a harness you should have gotten with your truck when new. this harness has bare wires on one end for the brake controller, and a rectangle plug on the other end. once you hook up the controller, you need to find the other end of the plug. it is burried DEEP up in the dash above the emergency brake. . .if you dig hard enough you will find it. plug it in and you should be good to go. and yes, there is a +12v wire leading to the 7-pin connector that can be used to charge batteries or what ever else you hvae on the trailer, just be sure not to overload the circuit.

BTW - I just learned a new trick.
If you put a jumper wire from the black to the green on the trailer harness, it'll light up your trailers running lights. Pretty cool when you are parked at a site.

Hey Mayfair, if you put a flasher between the black and green the lights will flash.

most of all dont let the colors fool ya.. in most cases red is hot.. but on trailer stuff its the left stop/turn. the black is the hot.. which is normally red and the white is ground which is normal black in dc circuits..
