Default Considering a 6.7 ... but worried.

Hey gang!

I have found this forum so valuable over the years and once again turn to the experts for your sage wisdom.

I'm considering trading in my 04 RAM 1500 HEMI QC 4x2 for an 08 RAM 2500 CTD QC4x4 due to a new camper in our future. We're looking at a 33' camper with a GVWR of 11k pounds, more than I would want to tow with the 1500 and what should be childs play for the Cummins. We really like camping and plan on taking the camper out several weekends a year if not most of them. But the truck is also my daily driver, grocery getter, run the kids to school\dance\soccer mini-van.

I've read so much about the CAT full issues, regen cycles, DPF (whatever that is) and so on ... the number of issues with the new emissions crap has me really concerned. I grew up on a farm milking cows and know a lot about diesel tractor engines but nothing about all the new fangled crap they stuff under the hood of a truck. All of this has me scratching my head wondering if I should just stay with what I have and look for a smaller camper. But I've wanted a CTD for so long ... it'stough.

Given my usage of the truck as a daily driver with little actual highway time, am I looking at major headaches with an 08 6.7?

Thanks for any advise.

Mike

For what I have gathered on the 6.7 is notfor those whodo mainly city driving. The guys out on the hwy towing the car haulers and big trailers seem to be happy. Any diesel likes to be run hard. The only fusses we ever really hear on 1st 2nd or third generations are the stop and go drivers and of course the modders. If you can keep her blown out Id say go for it. My next move is an 08 only because my 04 has eaten all the taxes the IRS can bare. Good Luck

You'll be fine with the 6.7L

Be sure to check out the mega cab. Your kids will love it.

Don't forget that the 6.7 uses ULSD fuel, not LSD.

Do the 06 5.9s require the ULSD fuel? I'm looking at a used one here as an alternative to the 6.7L.

5.9 can use LSD, but ULSD is about all you you can find.

I found some in SC but I didn't notice the difference in MPG's or performance, so maybe it was mixed and they won't relabel till the old is flushed out, but we took the trip in my cousins 6.7 and had to get off and look for fuel in NC and SC as most had LSD, should have took mine, the mega cab was nice but the 6.7 MPG sucked big time compared to my 5.9

There's one gas station that I frequent that I have no idea what they sell -- ULSD or LSD. One side shows "LSD" and the other side shows a half torn "ULSD" and "LSD" sticker. The guys in the shop have no clue. I wonder if there's a way I can tell which type of fuel it is...

Well thanks all, I'm leaning towards the 06 but a little worried that it's a "fleet" vehicle. I'm going to have to check it out pretty well to see what they might have done to abuse it. My luck has never been good when buying used...

you can tell the difference between LSD and ULSD. when LSD foams up it has a yellowish tint to it.ULSD is just about pure white.
