RE: oil analysis is in. . .

UOA looks darn good for 15K on it. So did you have to work very hard to get it an even 15,000 miles whne you changed it? I'm sending a UOA on my wifes car today as I switched it to Amsoil 0w20 back in August. I sure hope the 0w20 oil will hold up better then the Amsoil 5w20 XL that I used for one oil change that fell flat on its face. It had a TBN of 1.96 in only 4578 miles and yet they say its good for 7500 miles, Not!

it probably wasnt 15K on the nose, it was closer to 14 something, I just rounded up.

I'm surprized how well that oil held up and how high the TBN was. next time I'll probably just find a vampire and suck some out of the dipstick when I hit 10K. but if you ask me, it was $26 well spent to see my engine is staying together like it is. I was fully expecting to see a high copper, silver, and siliconcount

Drew, I just had an oil analysis done on my truck from blackstone labs, the iron content in mine was 36 and they said it was a bit high but likely due to my engine still breaking in. Does each company have a different avg. number they use to determine what is good?

IIRC each company's UOA report is based on an adverage of all oil samples to date of said engine type. I think I worded this correctly.

you are correct charles. each lab uses similar equipment. and while the results from the spectrum analysers may be a bit different by one or two either way. what you get from each lab will be very close to what is going on. Yes the results are done from a national average from each lab. and though your iron was lower than mine, and blackstone said that was high for you, it is still well within normal operating specs.

Iron content I wasnt tooo worried about. I knew mine may be a bit high seeing as how hard I am on the throttle, I was more worried about the copper(oil cooler) silver(bearings) and silicon(condition of the air filter)

I read somewhere that you should not compare ratings from different labs. At my last oil change I took two samples of the used oil and sent one to Blackstone and the other to Oil Analyzers (Amsoil). The two reports were quite different, especially the percentage of fuel in the oil. I personally think the Blackstone test is better and I plan to continue using them.

BTW, how much of a difference was there between the 2 reports. I know Blackstone is good but I think for the money they charge every oil report should include a TBN number. Also I asked them over a year ago to send me an oil kit and they have yet to send me one so I went to a compay who wanted my business.

So far the report from Amsoil gives me all the info I need and for a lot less $$$. I learned to buy the non postage paid oil sample kit as it only cost me $2.15 to mail in my wifes oil sample yesterday compaird to the extra $5.00 it cost for pre paid.

JMHO
