Default intercooler

When did they go to the better intercooler I have a 2005 3500 dodge ram with what looks like a plastic intercooler. A freind of mine has a 07 with what looks like a masive cast iron intercooler. I have twice the truck than he does and have this small plastic peice of garbage.
